11-16 Week of Evangelism

15th May Cultural Extravaganza in Newsham Park

We face a tremendous moment of opportunity! Merseyside always attracts a special interest from the news media during elections, and during debates relating to politics and society. With Gordon Brown announcing the date of the election on 6th May we have a particular opportunity:

Our week of prayer across the region will be 2nd to 9th May – incorporating the election day. What great timing! As we pray for God to move across the region and across the UK, the nation will be focused on the debate about what the country needs and what the future looks like. Already the place of our Christian heritage and values is becoming an increasingly visible topic.

At the end of the week of prayer in the Cathedral event on 10th, the church across the region will come together to make a very public expression of our unity, to call on God to touch the land, and to pray for a fresh movement of evangelistic initiatives across the country. We plan to publicly pray at that event for the newly elected representatives – MPs and Councillors across the region.

Please encourage everyone to come to the Cathedral event on 10th May – to make a big statement that the church is together and moving forward in this hugely significant season. Tickets are available on-line http://www.premier.org.uk/events/premierevents or at the Anglican Cathedral. The tickets are £5 towards the cost of the event.

Please also consider organising an event to reach out to your community, friends or neighbours during the week 9th to 16th May. On 15th May there will be a cultural extravaganza in Newsham Park 11:00am – 3:00pm with several churches already participating – please contact Chris Mason of Liverpool Youth For Christ if you want to get involved in that. chris@liverpoolyfc.co.uk

Events in the coming week and beyond:

Over the coming week 10 - 16 May a number of events and activities are planned:

Kirkby Churches are working together in reaching out in the market. Emmanuel Church in Fazakerley are organizing a fun day in the park. The Well Church in Orrell Park are organizing a number of gospel music outreaches with visiting singer Jimmy Lee Howard who used to work with BB King. 3 churches in the South of Liverpool are coming together with 80 people carrying out a ‘litter pick’ in their area.

At the end of the week, around 10 churches are working together to host a ‘Multicultural Extravaganza’ in Newsham park. This will see Christians from many nations coming together at a family event to express Jesus in music, dance and testimony.

Beyond this week, the Church in the region is bursting with initiatives and outreach. The 4Points material is now being used around the world. In Another Place, a network in Sefton go from strength to strength with creative dramatic programmes – the next being a huge presentation of the Narnia story in St Georges Hall. Old Roan Baptist have a week of evangelism with Marilyn Harry from 16th May.

Dear Friends,

We are all thinking about using our vote to see change in the land. While praying about the Heal Our Land initiative last week someone in one of the churches had a picture of a pound coin and an elastoplast plaster. She felt that the Lord was prompting her with the idea of everyone in the Church giving a pound towards the Heal Our Land project.

The steering group for Heal Our Land felt that this should be shared with the whole church across the region, giving every church the opportunity to sow into this timely and strategic initiative. We are suggesting that every church asks the congregation on Sunday 18^th April to take up a collection of £1 for every person on that day.

To explain and set the scene the following suggested summary could be used to ask the congregation for support:

Over recent years the church has changed greatly and the church in Britain has become truly international. Across Merseyside new congregations from Asia, Africa and South America are refreshing the wider church’s zeal for evangelism.

The Heal Our Land prayer concert in the Cathedral will be a declaration of the new multinational nature of the church in Britain. Together, the church will be worshiping, humbling ourselves before God and calling on Him for revival in our nation.

The two week Heal Our Land initiative begins with a week of prayer. This year we will be praying at a time of national importance: the General Election; What a time for prayer! We are experiencing a significant national economic challenge, as well as political, social and spiritual changes.

The second week of Heal Our Land will see a fresh burst of evangelism – sharing the hope that we have in Jesus. From 9^th to 15^th May the challenge is to see every believer in the region tell others about their faith.

For many years churches and Christian networks have been working together in wonderful and different ways. Great things have been done, and excellent work is being done. It seems that an amazing season of even more opportunity is opening up. More than ever people are asking questions about Christian beliefs and the place of faith in society. Faced with a worldwide recession and tremendous changes, people everywhere are asking deeper questions about life.

Heal Our Land is a fresh call to mission, and a fresh call to the changing mission field. The partner organizations bringing Heal Our Land to the Mersey region are helping to enable churches and mission organizations to rise to the challenge.

The organisers of Heal Our Land are asking that every member of every congregation gives £1 on 18^th April as a collective statement and practical contribution towards the costs of the initiative.
